Canada, Ian, isn't such a good choice. from what I've been told, there is a treaty between the US and Canada that declares when there is a Red Alert- remember the color coded alerts? the borders would stop existing and the effort would be mutual.

If you have any Irish ties and you can demonstrate them, the Irish government will give you a passport; friend of ours got one because his grandmother was Irish. Moved out when he was in 60s, and hasn't looked back since.
We're close to Canada here, and have been over enough times to know when and where we should go. If it gets so weird that the border is closed, I guess our place of last resort is Israel. It may not always be a great place, politically, but they have to let us in :-)
