Obama to Close Guantanamo
The headlines of the New York Times today brought tears to my eyes.
"Obama to Shut Guantánamo Site and C.I.A. Prisons"
It really is a new day, a new era. Finally, we can lift our head up high again. Finally, we are not acting like terrorists. Finally.
Or should I say, At Last.
As the detainees are set free, sent home, horrific stories will be told. We need to listen. We need to teach our children what our forefathers knew- there is no safety when you hand over your freedom. When you let your government take away your civil liberties, everyone suffers. It is our responsibility to live free, to fight back when our freedoms are being taken away, even under the guise of "Patriotism."
We know better. We must remember how many have died to protect those freedoms.
Most of all, there is no peace when you torture people.
Torture. Plain and simple. We tortured people for years. Now we will have to be held accountable.
I heard a commentator on NPR complain that the crowd booed when Bush was announced on stage Tuesday. No respect for the office, he said.
Bullshit. Bush had no respect for the office. He deserved to be booed and it was a glimmer of the kind of protest we desperately needed while he was in office.
It happened. At last.
No one threw a shoe.
No more torture under this administration. Obama signed the order before midnight on the day he was sworn in- it was of utmost urgency.
It was.

Hear, hear! Over the past eight years, it's been incredibly difficult to stomach the rhetoric concerning protecting the "freedom" of our nation and with the same hand, witnessing our government operating secret prisons and water-boarding prisoners. Finally is right...
The world is a much safer place w/o dubya in office.
i was never so happy to see an ex-president get into the helicopter and fly off into obscurity!!! and, i hope the mirror cracked when he looked into it!!
I thought that it was a wonderful example of democracy when people booed him. It was peaceful, and it wasn't nearly as disrespectful as his behavior for the past 8 years has been.
Hmmm, I'm glad Bush is gone. I think Obama had an awesome 1st day setting a new tone. I'm glad we're shutting down "Gitmo" but I'm pretty certain that while some deserve to be set free there are a few that don't. I do not belive they deserve torture or inhumane treatment, but don't think they all deserve to be set free either. I was glad to hear they'd be reviewing and making decisions on a case by case basis and that that is part of the reason we have a timeline of 1 yr to get it all closed out.
Why aren't you in bed getting over that bug and being pampered by the boys?
Na naa na na....
I gotta say, I keep humming that song...
sha nahnahnah.. sha nahnahnah... hey hey hey... goodbye...
no, everyone in gitmo is not innocent. but we need to try them, send them to jail or not.
we need to stop torturing them for information- so many years later, what could possibly be gained?
This is truly an amazing victory for all of us.
